## How to Play EuroMillions

### The Basics

EuroMillions is slightly similar to how other lottery games function – but they put their own spin on the formula. The gist is this: You select five numbers from 1 to 50, plus two additional numbers – also known as Lucky Stars – from 1 to 12. For players to win the jackpot, all five main numbers and both Lucky Stars have to match the combination drawn. The standard pricing for one EuroMillions ticket costs €2.50, but it may be a bit higher in some online outlets due to additional fees imposed by some lottery sites.

### The Super Draw

The EuroMillions Super Draw offers a guaranteed minimum prize of €130 million!

The EuroMillions Super Draws are special events held every now and then that ensures a big payout to winners. These draws function pretty much the same as any regular EuroMillions draw, with one difference: jackpots are set to a guaranteed amount of at least €130 million. Should no one win the jackpot, it will simply roll over to the succeeding draw, and the next, and so on until it reaches the €190 million jackpot cap. The jackpot can remain at the aforementioned cap for a total of four drawings.

If no one still wins the jackpot, then the prize money will be distributed among winners of the 2nd prize tier. This is what is called an Event Draw. So far, however, there has never been a EuroMillions Event Draw.

### The Odds of Winning

If you were thinking that it would be impossible to match all 5 numbers, plus 2 Lucky Stars, you’d be surprised to know that you actually have much better odds of winning a EuroMillions jackpot than, say, a Powerball one. Compared to the latter’s 1 in 292,201,338.00 odds, EuroMillions’ odds look much, much better. The overall odds for winning any prize, for instance, are 1 in 13 – pretty impressive, if you ask me. Take a gander at the table below to see what I mean:

## Predicting the EuroMillions Draw

You have to understand that probability theory is simply a reliable guide. Naturally, the expected frequency and the actual frequency will not always match exactly.

You use probability to predict the future outcome of the game to guide you on how to play your game.

For example, if we want to know in advance the outcome of EuroMillions after 2000 draws, we use the same formula for expected frequency:

As a smart EuroMillions player, you don’t want to waste your money on patterns with low probability. That is the power of probability calculation as we apply it in EuroMillions.

As a lotto player, you want to win the jackpot. Therefore, you should stick with either 3-odd-2-even or 2-odd-3-even and forget about the rest of the patterns.

You get the same idea when it comes to low-high patterns. You don’t want to pick a combination whose composition is purely low numbers or strictly high numbers.

However, EuroMillions is not only about low-high or odd-even patterns.

We discuss low-high and odd-even patterns to show that the lottery can be predicted to an extent. But the low-high and odd-even patterns don’t provide the whole picture of the EuroMillions game.

You must understand the EuroMillions game as a whole if you want to win the game. For you to achieve that, you have to understand intricate combinatorial patterns, which is the real key to EuroMillions’ success.

Treat EuroMillions as two separate lotteries. One is a pick-5 from 50 numbers; the other is

If you are lucky enough to win the lottery, the last thing you want to do is let the prize slip through your fingers.

To protect yourself, the first thing you should do after you receive a lottery ticket, even before you know whether it’s a winner or not, is to sign it. Your signature on the back of a lottery ticket can help prove it’s yours if it gets lost or stolen.

Also, never hand a ticket to a clerk at a lottery location and ask if you’ve won. ## The Biggest EuroMillions Winners

I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again: EuroMillions’ odds are pretty impressive for a lottery of this scale. In fact, there have been a total of 365 jackpot winners from the 9 countries that run EuroMillions. Here are some of the biggest winners:

- One of the biggest EuroMillions’ jackpots won was back in October 24, 2014, when an anonymous winner from Castelo Branco, Portugal nabbed the €190 million prize. The astronomical prize was the result of six roll overs.
- The jackpot has reached the €190 million jackpot ceiling other times as well. Interestingly, these happened in October as well. One was in October 6, 2017, and another in October 8, 2019. We’re sensing some kind of pattern here..
- In August 12, 2012, couple Adrian and Gillian Bayford won the £148,656,000 jackpot. Their story took a sad turn, however, as their new life – and the new problems that come with it – took a toll on their relationship. They have since divorced and are now living separate lives.
- Next up are Colin and Chris Weir who, in July 12, 2011, won the £161,653,000 jackpot. The couple went on to establish the Weir Charitable Trust, a charity organization that aims to support the Scottish community by way of funding worthwhile projects.

### So What Happens if You Win?

Unlike other lottery games, if you win the jackpot in EuroMillions, you don’t have the option to be paid in annuity. Instead, jackpots are paid as a lump sum – which means that you get to take home more than if annuity adjustments were involved.

As for taxes, you will be glad to know that EuroMillions games are tax-free – except for three European countries, that is. Portugal, for starters, takes 20% taxes from prizes exceeding €5,000. Spain, on the other hand, takes 20% off from prizes that exceed €2,500. Switzerland players have it worst though. The taxes collected from their winnings are approximately 35%.

## How Does the EuroMillions Lottery Work?

To win a EuroMillions jackpot, you must correctly pick seven numbers: five regular numbers and two «lucky stars.» The five regular numbers can be in any order, and so can the two lucky stars. The regular numbers run between 1 and 50, whereas the Lucky Stars can be between 1 and 12.

### Payout Changes in the EuroMillions Lottery

Note that the payouts changed in February of 2020. These changes made it possible to have bigger jackpots, but made the value of the lesser prizes smaller. The odds of winning remained the same.

### Odds of Winning the EuroMillions Lottery:

The odds of winning a prize at any tier level are about 1 in 13. The odds for specific prize levels are broken down as follows:

These odds don’t change regardless of how many people play since the numbers that you can pick are fixed. If more than one person chooses a set of winning numbers, the prize is split among all of the winners.

That means that a number-picking strategy that focuses on choosing less popular numbers might net you a bigger prize if you win a jackpot.

You can also choose to have your numbers automatically drawn for you. EuroMillions calls this option the Lucky Dip.

## How to WIN the EuroMillions Lotto Game

### PLAY A MIX OF ODD AND EVEN LOTTO NUMBERS

Choose the best Euro Millions Lotto numbers with a fairly even mix of odd and

even numbers. All odd numbers or all even numbers are drawn less than 3% of the time.

The best mix is to have 3/2 or 2/3 which means three odd and two even, or two odd and three even. One of these two patterns will occur in

68 percent of Euro Millions lotto drawings.

### PLAY A MIX OF HIGH AND LOW LOTTO NUMBERS

Winning numbers are usually spread across the entire number field.

Cut a number field in half to get the low half and the high half. In a

50-number game like EuroMillions, numbers 1 to 25 would be in the low half, and numbers 26 to 50

would be in the high half. All high numbers or all low numbers are rarely drawn, occurring

only 3 percent of the time. A mix of 3 high/2 low or 2 high/3 low occurs 68% of the time, so this is a good bet.

### OMIT ONE LOTTERY NUMBER GROUP

Look at a list of past winning lottery numbers in the Euromillions results, and you’ll see,

that usually one or more of the number groups is not included. For

example, in the combination 5-8-14-17-32, there are no 20’s. Tracking and studying

Number Groups can help you decide which group to omit and which group to give extra

heavy play.

### PLAY NUMBERS WITH A RECENTLY RARE GAMES OUT VALUE

List the number of games skipped (games out) since the last hit (win) for each of

the winning numbers during the last five games. Then mark the number of times each

skip occurred. If any skip from 0 to 5 did not occur, play the Lotto numbers that

are out that many games. (Help working with lotto games skipped.)

### LOTTO NUMBER SUM ADVICE — PLAY A BALANCED GAME

After you choose five numbers you want to play, add them together and make sure

that the sum of the five numbers adds up to somewhere between 95 and 160. Sums that

fall within that range will account for over 70 percent of all the 5-number sets of

winning EuroMillions Red Balls.

### CONSIDER INCLUDING ONE NUMBER FROM THE LAST DRAWING

In EuroMillions results, on average, one lottery number will be a repeat hit from the last drawing every

other drawing or 43 percent of the time.

### PLAY HOT NUMBERS THAT HAVE A LOW GAMES OUT VALUE

Numbers that have been out (losers) for six games or less account for about half of

the winning numbers. Losing numbers

that have been out for 12 games or less account for about three-quarters of all the winning numbers. This tells us that hot

numbers are more likely to hit, but don’t forget to include at least one long shot in

your group of 5.

### DON’T USUALLY INCLUDE A LONGSHOT NUMBER

It is difficult to know when a cold number will end a long losing streak. If you play a

number every drawing because you think it is due, you could be chasing it

for many months. (Number 45 in New York Lotto sat out 100 drawings before it

finally hit.) Although, when a number has been out for 70 games or so, it might be

worth chasing.

## How to Get Lucky in Lotto

### CASH IN ON THE LUCK OF OTHERS

When you form a Lotto pool, your group is also pooling its aggregate luck. A

jackpot could happen because of the luck just one member brings to your pool.

Select your partners carefully. Share your luck with winners, not losers. Avoid

negative people. Not only are they unlucky, but they dampen enthusiasm and drain

energy from others. You want to enhance your own luck, not dilute its strength. One

quick way to tell winners from losers is simply to ask them: «Do you think you

are a lucky person?» Many people quickly admit, «I’m unlucky. I never win

anything.» They won’t bring good luck to your group either.

### CASH IN ON A POSITIVE ATTITUDE

No one should play games of chance out of desperation because they need the

winnings. The needy have a greater fear of losing the hard-earned money they gamble

with. It is just one of life’s dirty tricks that the very fear of losing blocks the

## The Best Group of Combinations In EuroMillions

Earlier, we discussed that any questions you ask about the lottery must be a combinatorial and probability problem to solve.

So to know the probability of 1-2-3-4-5, we ask the question “What is the probability of a combination composed of three-odds and two-even numbers?”

However, this is not the only question we can ask, we can also ask:

“What is the probability of a combination composed of five low numbers?”

The problem though, two different questions may provide different probability results.

When you deal with low-high and odd-even patterns as two separate probability analyses, you will encounter serious contradiction.

To illustrate the contradiction, 1-2-3-4-5 is one of the best combinations under odd-even patterns.

But then we know that under the analysis of the low-high patterns, such combination is one of the worst ones.

So combinatorial mathematics and probability theory can be very confusing if you are not careful.

So what is the solution?

The solution is to combine the two analyses into one combinatorial design.

So now to solve the probability of the combination 1-2-3-4-5, we ask this question instead:

“What is the probability of a combination composed of three-low-odds and two-low-even numbers?”

That’s how advanced combinatorial patterns can help you along the way.

For simplicity, I have divided EuroMillions patterns into three groups.

Best Group | Middle Group | Worst Group |

Patterns #1, #2 | Patterns #3 to #28 | Patterns #29 to #56 |

Only 2 patterns | 26 patterns | 28 patterns |

As you notice, there are only two best patterns out of 56 patterns in EuroMillions 5/50 game.

The table above is very straightforward. If you want to win the EuroMillions, then focus on patterns #1 and #2. And forget about the rest of the patterns.

The problem, almost 90% of the lotto players do not know the worst combinations that will put their money down the drain. For example, many people pick their combinations that belong to the worst group.

There are millions of these worst combinations in EuroMillions. How do you know your combinations are not one of these worst types?

## Minding your ratio of success to failure

Odds and probability are two different terms with two different equations. The difference between the two can be best describe when we study the composition of combinations.

As a lotto player, you don’t have the power to change the underlying probability, and you cannot beat the odds of the Euromillions game. But you have the power to know all the possible choices and make the right decision based on those choices.

And making the right choice is possible when you know the difference between odds and probability.

What is the difference?

Probability refers to the measurement that an event will likely occur. And we measure the likelihood by using the formula:

We normally expressed the results of this formula in percentage.

Now, to get the odds, we use this formula instead:

What you get from this formula is a ratio.

So the difference is that the probability is the measurement of chance while the odds are the ratio of success to failure.

In layman’s term, the difference between odds and probability can be described in the following way:

Probability = Chance

Odds = Advantage

That is, you cannot control the probability and you cannot beat the odds, but at least you can choose the best odds and get the best ratio of success to failure.

Let’s consider the combination 2-4-6-8-10. This combination is composed of 5 even numbers with no odd numbers. This combination belongs to the 0-odd-5-even group.

In the Euromillions game, there are 53,130 ways you can combine 5 numbers that are all even numbers and no odd numbers.

Therefore we calculate the odds of a 0-odd-5-even in the following way:

Odds of 5-even-0-odd = 53,130 / 2,065,630

This means that 2-4-6-8-10 and all similar combinations under the group of 0-odd-5-even will give you 2 or 3 opportunities to match the winning combinations for every 100 attempts that you play the Euromillions game.

As you can see, a combination such as 2-4-6-8-10 offers a very low ratio of success.

In comparison, you will have a better ratio of success when you pick a more balanced odd and even numbers.

Let’s prove that.

There are 690,000 ways you can combine numbers of type 3-odd-2-even. If we calculate the odds, we get:

Odds of 3-odd-2-even = 690,000 / 1,428,760

In simple terms, a 3-odd-2-even combination will give you the opportunity to match the winning numbers 32 to 33 times in every 100 attempts that you play the Euromillions game.

If we compare the two classes of combinations, we can see a big difference:

The way to explain the table above is that if you play the 0-odd-5-even combination, then expect that you have 2 million ways to fail and thereby you have less opportunity to win.

On the other hand, if you play a more balanced combination such as a 3-odd-2-even, then you have more opportunities to win, and the number of ways you fail decreased to just 1.4 million.

In a random event like the Euromillions game, making an intelligent choice requires mathematical strategy. We calculate all the possible choices and finally make an intelligent choice. It’s all about how not to be mathematically wrong.

But to give you a gist of how to make an intelligent choice, let’s dig deeper through these combinatorial patterns below.

## What Is the EuroMillions Lottery?

EuroMillions is a European-based lottery. It has drawings twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays at about 9 pm CET. Ticket sales close about half an hour before the drawing and open again about an hour afterward.

Payouts are awarded for 13 different winning combinations. These payouts are fixed, except for the jackpot; the size of the jackpot prize depends on the number of tickets sold with a minimum of €17 million. If no jackpot winner is chosen, the money rolls over to the next drawing to make an even larger jackpot, up to a maximum of €250 million.

So far, three winners have walked away with the previous maximum — the €190 million jackpot. No one has won a $250 million jackpot yet

If the EuroMillions jackpot is at €190 million and no winner is drawn, the jackpot will remain at €190 million for the next drawing, but funds will be added to the prize in the next tier down where there are winners.

If that happens four times, the entire jackpot will be divided among the winners in the next tier down where winning numbers have been selected. This is usually the tier where the winners have selected six out of seven winning numbers including the two lucky stars.

## How to Buy EuroMillions Tickets

If (and only if) you are located in one of the participating countries, you can buy EuroMillions tickets online as well as from local retailers. Just as with Powerball and other lotteries, you can find EuroMillions retailers at convenience stores and similar locations.

When you buy EuroMillions tickets, you can either select your own numbers or use the Lucky Dip or Quick Pick option, which lets the lottery software choose your numbers for you at random.

Each set of picks costs €2.50, £2.50 or CHF3.50, depending on where you buy your tickets. You can choose up to 70 sets of numbers per ticket. If you buy online, you can also choose which of the two weekly drawings you want to play, and choose to play the same numbers in future weeks.

## The Low-High Patterns Based On The Actual EuroMillions Results

We derive the low-high patterns using the following sets:

Low = {1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,…,25}

High = {26,27,28,29,30,…,50}

Again, the results of the study show that EuroMillions follows the dictate of probability.

The table and the graph above reinforces the fact that the EuroMillions game is subordinate to the principle of probability.

- 3-low-2-high is expected to appear 416 times – it occurred 468 times in the real draw.
- 4-low-1-high is projected to appear 190 times – it appeared in 216 times in the actual draw.
- 0-low-5-high is supposed to be drawn 32 times – it was drawn 22 times in the real draw.

As a EuroMillions player, you should pay attention to the composition of your combination and make sure that it follows either the 3-low-2-high or 2-low-3-high patterns. And never play the rest of the low-high patterns.

## How to Beat the Odds of the EuroMillions Game

Of course, you cannot beat the odds of EuroMillions. But thankfully, math can help. There’s a way to increase your chances of winning the game.

The only way to increase your chances of winning is to buy more tickets.

But buying more tickets is useless if you’re making the wrong choices. It’s not OK to choose 1-2-3-4-5, and 2-3-4-5-6, and 46-47-48-49-50.

I will explain why.

But first of all, I must ask you to forget about hot or cold numbers. For the longest time, people mistakenly believe that if a number frequently occurs in the past, the same number is bound to be drawn more often in the future. This belief must be corrected.

Now, let’s proceed.

All combinations in EuroMillions 5/50 have the same probability.

It means that 1-2-3-4-5 is equally likely.

Play 2-4-6-8-10, and that is equally likely too.

Perhaps your combination is 5-10-15-20-25, this combination has the same probability as any other in the universe of Euromillions’ possible combinations.

The truth, all combinations have equal chances.

But think about this. Consider more tickets where all numbers are picked in the form of straight combinations:

- 2-3-4-5-6

- 46-47-48-49-50

If I ask lotto players to spend their money on the above combinations, the surest response I will get is “no way.”

And why not?

That’s because people don’t trust their understanding of probability.

You see, if you are confident that all combinations have the same probability, why be afraid to play all those combinations.

In other words, while you believe that all combinations have the same probability, there’s part of you that says buying “multiple tickets where all combinations are straight numbers” cannot be right.

But gut feeling shouldn’t be superior to mathematics.

If you want to win the EuroMillions game, you have to have a strong mathematical foundation.
